Prostate Cancer Care Cancer Centre London - Chris' Story

At Icon, we’re privileged to share the powerful stories of our patients – stories that remind us of the strength of the human spirit and the vital importance of medical expertise and compassionate care.

Today, we shine the light on Chris Powell Smith, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather in London, whose journey with prostate cancer care at Cancer Centre London reveals the power of medical care, family and friends, positivity and grace.

Early days and diagnosis

Chris considers himself fortunate in life, with a loving marriage of over sixty years to his wife, Jenny, and a close-knit family of four children. Known for his pragmatic outlook, Chris has always faced life’s hurdles one step at a time, focusing on what can be done rather than worrying about what cannot.

So, when his prostate health came into question, he approached the situation with the same steady resolve.

Personalised Care at Cancer Centre London

Chris’s introduction to his care team at Cancer Centre London (CCL) marked a turning point. Under the guidance of Dr. Vincent Khoo, a specialist in prostate cancer care, Chris began a journey defined by expertise, empathy, and reassurance.

“The confidence I felt came from the professionalism and quiet assurance of the team,” Chris says.

“From the beginning, I knew I was in good hands.”

Best Care possible

From the outset, Chris was placed on a personalised treatment plan tailored specifically to his needs. At CCL, the philosophy of care extends beyond clinical protocols — it encompasses the emotional and psychological well-being of each patient.

“At CCL, we recognise that each patient’s journey is unique,” says Dr. Khoo.

“Our goal is to ensure that from the moment a patient walks into our centre, they feel supported not only medically but also emotionally.
We tailor our treatments to each individual, ensuring that they receive the best possible care tailored to their situation.
This approach allowed Chris to feel confident and reassured, knowing he was in capable hands, and helped him maintain his positive outlook throughout his treatment process.”

Close to home

Throughout his treatment, one constant source of strength was the unwavering support of Jenny and their family. Their presence, combined with the professionalism of the HOSP team, helped sustain him through every stage of care.

“Throughout all this, the support of my wife and family and the medical staff from CCL were consistently present.
They just got on with what had to be done in a professional manner as if it was all normal, and I found that reassuring,” Chris reflects.

Looking ahead with hope

Today, Chris remains philosophical about his prognosis, focusing on his quality of life rather than illness and aging.

And he shares his immense gratitude towards his family and the medical professionals who have managed his condition effectively, ensuring that he lives life fully and pain-free.

“I cannot overstate the importance of family support, nor the importance of the professionalism of all the staff from the time of entering CCL onwards. They are all a great help,” says Chris.
