For Medical Physicist Matthew Jennings, helping to bring cancer services into new regions is as much about people, learning and collaboration as it is about technical delivery.
Recently, Matthew was appointed Radiotherapy Physics Commissioning Lead for Icon Cancer Centre UK’s expanding network.
In this new role, he’s excited about connecting local teams with expertise and experience from across Icon's global network to deliver exceptional clinical care to more patients across the UK.
A new experience
In 2025, Matthew Jennings, then Group Senior Medical Physicist, travelled to Bali on a short-term assignment to help bring new radiotherapy technology online at Icon’s first centre in Indonesia, Icon Cancer Centre Bali. Drawing on his experience commissioning and implementing complex radiotherapy technologies, he worked closely with local teams during the critical commissioning phase, supporting safe introduction into clinical care.
“In Bali, my role was to support the local physicists in commissioning the new machine in line with Icon’s processes, making sure everything was thoroughly tested before treatments began,” said Matthew.
While the technical requirements were familiar, the experience introduced new challenges - particularly navigating complex clinical discussions across a language barrier.
“The local physicists were incredibly collaborative, and working together as one team made the experience really rewarding.”
Learning through different ways of working
For Matthew, working within a different healthcare system highlighted how cancer services can vary from country to country, from clinical infrastructure to communication styles and professional responsibilities.
I understood that there would be differences, but working there really highlighted how important it is to be mindful of those differences from the outset. It’s changed how I’ll approach future projects.

One of the most unexpected differences for Matthew was the physical environment of the Bali centre.
“The radiation bunker was bright, with artwork throughout, which made it feel warm and inviting rather than clinical,” he said.
“It really made me think about how much the environment can influence a patient’s experience, and how we can take inspiration from that elsewhere.”
A lasting cultural memory
Beyond the technical work, Matthew speaks fondly of the celebrations surrounding the Bali centre’s opening.
“Being part of the ceremonies and traditions was incredibly special. It was a multi-day process, and the excitement around the new facility was something I’ll always remember.”
“The food was incredible, and I loved the open-air restaurants near Sanur Beach, as well as seeing fireworks most nights - it was unlike anything I’ve experienced before.”
Experiences like these reinforce the importance of cultural understanding and local engagement in delivering care that is trusted, respected and truly patient-centred.
Taking the next step
Now in the UK to lead radiotherapy physics commissioning across Icon Cancer Centre UK's growing network, Matthew continues to play a key role in expanding access to advanced radiotherapy across Icon’s global network, helping ensure more patients can benefit from the latest innovations in cancer treatment and care.
So, what lessons from Indonesia will he take with him to the UK?
“While the cultural differences may not be as pronounced, every healthcare system, team and community is different,” Matthew said.
My experience in Indonesia reinforced the importance of staying curious, listening first and adapting your approach to local needs. Those are lessons I’ll continue to apply in the UK.
