What is low-dose radiotherapy?

Low-dose radiotherapy uses carefully targeted X-rays to treat inflammation in joints, tendons, or surrounding tissues. While radiotherapy is commonly associated with cancer treatment, the doses used here are much lower and designed specifically to reduce chronic pain and swelling.

This treatment can be an effective alternative for people who have not found relief from physiotherapy, medication, or other conservative approaches.

Conditions we treat

Osteoarthritis

A common form of arthritis caused by the gradual breakdown of cartilage, resulting in joint pain, stiffness and reduced movement. It often affects the knees, hips and hands.

Achilles Tendinopathy

A chronic condition involving degeneration or irritation of the Achilles tendon causing pain, stiffness, and swelling.

Plantar Fasciitis

One of the most common causes of heel pain and occurs when the plantar fascia becomes overstressed, irritated, or torn causing pain and inflammation.

Benefits of low-dose radiotherapy

Low-dose radiotherapy offers a non-invasive, painless treatment option with minimal side effects, eliminating the need for a hospital stay. With a high success rate, around 80% of patients experience meaningful pain relief. Furthermore, it can also reduce or delay the necessity for surgery.

Are there any side effects?

Most people tolerate low-dose radiotherapy very well. Possible side effects include:

Short-term

  • Mild skin redness or discolouration
  • Temporary increase in pain (usually resolves within weeks)

Long-term

  • Slight skin changes (dryness, thinning or hardening)
  • Very small risk of skin cancer (1–10 in every 10,000 people)

We use highly targeted, low-dose techniques to minimise these risks.
